Next Mazda C/D segment car to have MPG and CO2 emissions equal to today’ superminis
By 2015 average Mazda fuel economy 30% improved
Huge operational cost and tax savings for fleets and company car drivers
A ‘green’ revolution is being staged by Mazda that will mean upper medium sector company car drivers by 2015 will be at the wheel of models with fuel economy and emissions equivalent to today’s supermini standards.
Improved aerodynamics, retuned powertrains, a concerted focus on reducing vehicle weight and the gradual introduction of sophisticated new technologies such as i-stop (Smart Idling Stop System) will all contribute to delivering first-class environmental and MPG performance for all Mazda vehicles.
This fuel-sipping, emissions-busting technology known as SKYTECH aims to achieve a 30 percent improvement in average fuel economy over the 2008 level for all Mazda cars sold globally by 2015, but fleets can start to expect to benefit from the breakthrough technology in less than two years time.
Fuel economy and carbon dioxide emission levels are directly linked, so improvements in petrol and diesel consumption will deliver reduced CO2 emissions. While other manufacturers press on with hybrid and alternative fuel solutions, Mazda’s short term focus is to significantly improve efficiencies delivered through a traditional internal combustion engine platform. This is likely to be delivered at a lower investment than required in hybrid development but deliver the same CO2 and fuel economy benefits as the hybrid vehicles.
Taken together, those benefits translate into significant financial savings for fleet decision-makers and company car drivers alike in terms of vehicle operating costs, reduced fuel bills and savings in vehicle-related taxes including: capital allowances, Vehicle Excise Duty and Class 1A National Insurance contributions for businesses and benefit-in-kind tax for drivers.
Mazda has already embarked on its ‘green’ crusade with today’s key fleet models such as the Mazda3 and Mazda6 reflecting the environmental strategy. For example, CO2 levels on the Mazda3 are already at 119g/km on 1.6D models and at sub-150g/km on the Mazda6 2.2D.
Mazda Fleet and Remarketing Director Peter Allibon said: “Our existing customers are already benefiting from the first phase of our environmental strategy.
“The first vehicles from the SKYTECH programme we expect to start reaching fleets in 2012. The indications are that the emission levels on some Mazda C/D segment models will drop below 100 g/km, while all models will be below 120 g/km.
“While Mazda is working behind the scenes on technological alternatives to petrol and diesel engines with research and development on hydrogen vehicles continuing apace, we expect that the internal combustion engine will remain the dominant and economic choice for fleets and company car drivers into the foreseeable future.”
That view was recently echoed in a major report by leading contract hire and fleet management company Leasedrive Velo. The study, ‘A vision of fleet management in 2015. Predictions on how the fleet industry could look in the future’, concluded that petrol and diesel-engined company cars would remain the vehicles of choice.
Mazda predicts that its SKYTECH technology will mean tomorrow’s petrol-engined models delivering fuel economy equivalents to that of current models that are one class smaller. For example, the Mazda6 could deliver average fuel economy of around 45mpg – a 10mpg improvement on today’s levels.
Fuel economy improvements are predicted to be even greater on future Mazda diesel models with engineers forecasting Mazda C/D segment models returning almost 70mpg – equivalent to today’s Mazda2 1.4D and 1.6D models with CO2 levels around the 100 g/km mark.
The third strand of Mazda’s ‘green’ revolution features the introduction of a new six-speed automatic transmission that will deliver a further five percent fuel economy improvement to models compared with the current five-speed transmission.
Mr Allibon added: “Fleets and drivers are flocking to Mazda in increasing numbers due to the sporty design and performance of our range and its well positioned list price. When those fleets and drivers replace their existing Mazda company cars from 2012 onwards they will see significant performance and environmental improvements to what is already a multi-award winning vehicle line-up.
“The focus that our engineers have on improving the environmental performance of Mazda models means that I anticipate that we and our existing customers will be business partners for many years to come.”

The handover ceremony, which took place at SEAT’s modern factory and headquarters in Martorell, near Barcelona, marks the completion of the Spanish brand’s largest ever green car deal, as well as the largest single fleet deal yet for SEAT UK.
Senior representatives from SEAT S. A. and SEAT UK including Director of Export Markets Jochen Funk and Martorell factory Manager Juan Ramón Rodríguez welcomed the visitors from British Gas who included General Fleet Manager Colin Marriott.
The record-breaking deal was brokered by SEAT UK’s Fleet and Business Sales team led by Head of Fleet and Business Sales Nick Andrews, and saw the ultra-green Leon come out tops in a tender process that initially involved more than 50 models.
British Gas is the UK’s largest domestic energy supplier with more than 20 million energy and central heating services customers.
Over the next few weeks hundreds of British Gas drivers will be getting the keys to their new, second generation Leon Ecomotives – becoming in the process the first people in the country to take to the road in the new model.
This improved version of SEAT’s already impressive Leon Ecomotive brings with it both enhanced economy and further reduced CO2 emissions. At only 99 g/km in official tests, the new model is a full 20 g/km better than its predecessor thanks to the addition of Auto Start/Stop and energy recovery functions, allied to the engineering advances provided by a new 1.6-litre common rail diesel engine. Also integral to that exceptional economy is the Spanish brand’s use of revised gearbox ratios and recommended gear indicator.
SEAT UK Head of Fleet and Business Sales, Nick Andrews, said: ‘The handover of the very first right-hand drive new generation Leon Ecomotives to British Gas is a significant moment for us.
‘The delivery of these exciting new cars marks the culmination of months of hard work by the entire SEAT fleet and business team, not to mention the efforts of our colleagues from SEAT S. A. who helped us to meet the necessary production and handover schedule.
‘This historic deal very clearly demonstrates our determination to become a fleet manufacturer of choice.’

The Fiat 500 has been the forerunner of many new technologies and features such as Start&Stop, along with eco:Drive, Blue&Me, and Euro 5 engines. Now, Fiat’s popular range of city cars is to be further enhanced with the introduction of a powerful new 1.3-litre 16-valve MultiJet diesel engine.
The range’s out-going 75bhp MultiJet unit is being replaced with a more potent but also more environmentally-friendly 95bhp ‘MultiJet II’ version, which not only boasts improved mpg and CO2 emissions figures, but also incorporates Fiat’s acclaimed Start&Stop technology to further reduce fuel consumption when driving around town. The engine will become the most powerful diesel unit available in the A segment.
The new unit introduces an innovative variable geometry turbocharger that enables it to deliver 95bhp at 4000rpm and 200Nm of torque at only 1500rpm. This output significantly improves the car’s performance, taking its top speed to 112mph (from 103mph) and reducing the 0-62mph acceleration time from 12.5 to just 10.7 seconds.
Fuel consumption is improved from 67.3mpg to 72.4mpg in the combined cycle, while emissions drop to 104g/km of CO2 (from 110g/km). Together with Start&Stop, the engine also includes a DPF particulate filter for improved emissions efficiency and effectiveness from a cold start.
“This remarkable new diesel engine will add even greater excitement to the fantastic 500 range, but without adding to the cost of ownership,” says Andrew Humberstone, managing director, Fiat Group Automobiles UK Ltd. “In fact, with greater fuel economy and lower emissions, everyone will benefit from this new variant.”

BMW’s class-leading Sports Activity Vehicle, the BMW X5, will receive an array of design and engine changes offering even greater performance and lower emissions, whilst also updating its look. The new BMW X5 will be on sale from 5 June.
Three new engines will be launched for the xDrive30d, xDrive40d – replacing the xDrive35d – and the xDrive50i – replacing the xDrive48i. All of the new powerplants now meet EU5 standards.
The entry level xDrive30d has been upgraded to provide increased performance, making this the first conventionally-powered luxury SAV to record a sub 200g/km CO2 reading. The engine consumes just 38.2mpg on the combined cycle and emits only 195g/km of CO2 – a 10 per cent improvement – yet produces 245hp, up 10hp on the previous xDrive30d. Acceleration to 62mph now takes only 7.6 seconds – a six per cent improvement over the previous model.
The replacement of the twin-turbocharged xDrive35d with the new xDrive40d sees an improvement in emissions of 10 per cent, emitting only 198g/km CO2 whilst delivering 37.7mpg on the combined cycle. In true EfficientDynamics style the performance of the car has also increased. The zero to 62mph time is now just 6.6 seconds, down from 7.0 seconds, courtesy of a 306hp output, 20hp more than the outgoing engine.
Powered by the world’s first twin-turbocharged V8 engine with the catalytic converter located in the vee, the xDrive50i has an extra 53hp compared to the model it replaces, taking the total to 408hp. This leads to a lower zero to 62mph time of 5.5 seconds, an improvement of 1.0 second over the outgoing powertrain.
The BMW X5 will be mated to a standard eight-speed automatic transmission. This transmission helps to lower the X5’s CO2 output and allows smoother shifting and greater driving dynamics.
The new BMW X5 includes a number of exterior changes, enhancing the athletic appearance of BMW’s original 4×4. Revised front bumpers with enlarged vents, to increase the air supply to the engine and brakes, and matt aluminium-look lower scuff plates and vent fins, now feature to underscore its performance credentials.
New xenon headlights, with bright white LED corona rings, modernise the face of the car whilst the more centralised front fog lights complete the new front end. At the rear is a revised red light cluster, enhancing the lines of the car with horizontal LED light bars. Enlarged tail pipes, within a redesigned rear bumper, finish off the look.
Enhanced standard specification
Completing the updates is a raft of additions to the standard equipment list. As well as the new eight-speed automatic transmission, for the first time leather upholstery comes as standard across the entire X5 range. Xenon headlights will light the way for the entire range whilst Servotronic steering now comes as standard.
A wider range of high-tech options are available, including Lane Departure Warning, Active Cruise Control with ‘Stop and Go’ function, speed limit display and side-view cameras. Aesthetically, a new colour pallet is available.
Prices for the new BMW X5 will start at £43,980 OTR.
