MCNISH AND AUDI SPORT TEAM-MATES IN PRE-SEASON FITNESS CHECK

Britain’s Allan McNish took time out from fine-tuning his new diesel-engined Audi sportscar to personally get himself up to speed by attending Audi Sport’s annual winter fitness training camp last week (12-19 Feb).

McNish has been testing his Audi racecar in readiness for the season-opening Sebring 12 Hours in Florida next month (19 March) but spent seven days in the mountain region of Ofterschwang, Germany, to ensure his physical fitness is in absolute peak condition.

The Scotsman, along with his Audi “factory” team-mates, went through the pain barrier in various activities. These included skiing and mountain walking in snow shoes plus intense gym sessions featuring running, weights, spinning, soccer and volleyball.

Allan hopes the hard work will pay off in his racecar’s cockpit when the Dumfries-born ace begins a hectic seven race, nine month Intercontinental Le Mans Cup campaign.

“It is always a hard weeks training but also a good week to get to know and understand your team-mates a better in a non-racing environment,” commented McNish. “Tom [Kristensen], Dindo [Capello] and I are all strong and fit enough but there is still that healthy element of competition between us which makes it a fun week.”

To start the winter camp, the drivers were subject to a medical examination, in which the blood values and stamina were checked on a bicycle ergo-meter. “For every driver who has been with us for a number of years it’s possible to draw good comparisons over that time,” says Audi Sport’s team doctor Dr. Christian John.

“We’ve often won races over the last few years, particularly at Le Mans, because our drivers are fit and can drive four consecutive stints at night without any problems. The competition has caught up a little in this respect – but I believe we are still a little bit ahead.”

The daily programme at the Sonnenalp was always in two parts: 30 minutes stretching followed by endurance training with the focus on skating, cross country skiing and “snow shoe” hiking during the morning with team sports like football, tennis or volleyball later in the day.

Audi competes with a “closed” sportscar for the first time since 1999 at Le Mans in June, a fact not lost on Dr. John. “The regulations stipulate that the cockpit temperature may not exceed a certain value,” he says. “But the air in the cockpit is drier and warmer than with an open sports prototype, which is why it will be important to carry a drink bottle on board.”

In general race drivers must be able to drink a lot of fluid before a race to withstand the heat. “Endurance training helps the body to compensate for both,” says Dr. John.

“A driver’s neck is heavily loaded, which is why the neck and shoulder muscles must be specially trained. There are exercises and devices specifically for this which all our drivers have at home. Arms, legs and the neck must all be seen as one. Long-distance running is a particularly good exercise for race drivers, which is why I am very pleased that many of our drivers regularly take part in marathons.”

McNish will share a diesel-engined Audi R15 TDI with regular co-drivers Tom Kristensen (Denmark) and Dindo Capello (Italy) and sets out to score his fourth and Audi’s 10th race victory in the season-opening Sebring 12 Hours race on 19 March.

TDISport Car Of The Year 2010 is TDIfurby

Congratulations to TDISport member TDIfurby.
Jason (TDIfurby) has won the title of TDISport Car Of The Year, his diesel monster started life as a standard Skoda Fabia PD100 back in early 2004.
By 2005 TDIfurby set about converting his PD100 Fabia into a PD130 (the first in the country, perhaps the world!). The modification bug firmly set in with Jason and before long a hybrid turbo was installed shortly followed by a 312mm brake setup to assist a little more with the importance of being able to stop.
Water methanol came further down the mods list to give yet more power into such a light weight roller-skate.

Now running 275bhp and with the target of 300bhp the TDIfurby project can be seen here:

We very much doubt Jason will settle for 300bhp once achieved though.

Well done for the title!

Bluemotion Technology now Available on Scirocco & Passat

The cleanest and most fuel efficient versions of the Scirocco and Passat CC yet produced have been unveiled in the form of BlueMotion Technology models.

As with all of Volkswagen’s BlueMotion Technology vehicles, the new Scirocco and Passat CC variants combine efficiency with comfort and refinement to create cars that deliver greater economy and fewer emissions, yet which remain conventional to drive, service and maintain.

All entry-level Scirocco and GT trim models with the 2.0-litre 140 PS engine now feature BlueMotion Technology modifications including Stop/Start and battery regeneration systems to help to create the cleanest and most fuel efficient Scirocco to date. The models, available with a six-speed manual or optional six-speed DSG gearbox, offer savings through increased fuel economy, improved from 55.4 mpg to 62.8 mpg on the combined cycle (51.4 to 57.6 DSG), and lower emissions, down from 134 g/km to 118 g/km (145 to 129 DSG) to allow all BlueMotion Technology Sciroccos to drop two tax brackets over previous models.

Volkswagen has also announced revisions to the 2.0-litre TDI 170 PS engine fitted to the Scirocco GT, which result in fuel economy figures improving to 55.4 mpg from 53.3 mpg (50.4 to 51.4 DSG) and CO2 emissions reducing from 139 to 134 g/km (147 to 144 for DSG) .

The Passat CC line-up has also been updated and sees BlueMotion Technology models join the range in place of existing diesel versions. As with the Scirocco range, the new additions to the Passat CC range have been modified to optimise efficiency and economy, with regenerative braking and Start/Stop systems fitted to the four-door coupé for the first time.

These revisions help the 2.0-litre TDI 140 PS Passat CC models achieve a combined 60.1 mpg, up from 50.4, and CO2 emissions are cut to just 125 g/km, down from 146 g/km. The more powerful 2.0-litre diesel engine in the range producing 170 PS also boasts improved figures with economy up to 57.6 mpg (51.4 DSG) and emissions down to 129 g/km (144 DSG).

The Scirocco and Passat CC BlueMotion Technology models are available to order at Volkswagen Retailers now. For more information please visit www.volkswagen.co.uk.

Best Large Car Award For Skoda Superb – Again

Skoda Superb voted Best Large Car
Škoda Superb takes Best Large Car for second year running
New Superb Estate takes the crown for Best Estate Car
Yeti is announced as runner-up in new category; Best Crossover Car
The Škoda Superb has been named in the Diesel Car magazine’s annual Car of the Year awards 2010, taking the top spot in two categories.

The Superb outshone the competition for the second year running in the Best Large Car category, whilst the new Superb Estate was named Best Estate Car winning over stiff competition from a number of other brands.

The Yeti was also recognised in the awards, earning the runners up spot in one of the new categories; best Crossover Car. Since its launch in September 2009 the Yeti has proved to be a runaway success, winning the Top Gear magazine ‘Family Car of the Year’ award and being shortlisted for European Car of the Year in 2010.

In recognition of the Superb’s impressive design and value for money, the Diesel Car awards will join the array of other accolades that the Superb has picked up to date including the Top Gear Luxury Car of the Year Award in 2010.

Well deserving of the top spot in the Best Estate Car, the new Superb Estate was launched at the start of the year and is the largest and most luxurious car to ever wear the Škoda badge. Originally designed in the 1930s with luxury and elegance in mind, today’s Superb range builds on these strengths, with more rear legroom than many prestige cars on the market and some ingenious technological advances such as AFS (adaptive front light system), touch screen technology and park assist.

An acknowledgment of the high standard and quality of the Škoda Superb, the Diesel Car Awards demonstrate that the luxury, striking design and value for money that the Superb offers is certainly a winning combination.

80.7 MPG AND 91 G/KM: VOLKSWAGEN LAUNCHES MOST EFFICIENT POLO YET

The new Polo BlueMotion is available to order from Volkswagen Retailers today, with prices starting at £14,445 RRP on the road for the three-door, and £15,045 for the five-door model.

The new Polo BlueMotion adopts an all-new highly advanced 1.2-litre TDI three-cylinder common rail diesel engine developing 75 PS, and 133 lbs ft (180 Nm) of torque available from just 2,000 rpm. This new engine, combined with longer gearing through the five-speed manual gearbox, regenerative braking and an automatic Start/Stop system, help the new Polo BlueMotion emit just 91 g/km of CO2 while returning an impressive 80.7 mpg on the combined cycle. This grants the new Polo BlueMotion a theoretical range of over 800 miles on one tank of diesel.

These technological enhancements are accompanied by several cosmetic changes designed to maximise efficiency. Comprising bespoke bumpers, side skirts and an extended roof spoiler along with 15-inch ‘Greenland’ alloy wheels fitted with low rolling resistance tyres, they contribute towards making the new Polo BlueMotion among the most efficient vehicles currently available in the UK.

The Polo BlueMotion accelerates from a standstill to 62 mph in 13.9 seconds and on to a top speed of 107 mph.

Comfort levels remain high with manual air conditioning, cruise control and leather steering wheel fitted as standard. As with all models in the Polo range, a number of safety features are also fitted, including four airbags, ABS and ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme).

The Polo BlueMotion is available to order at Volkswagen Retailers now with the first cars expected in May. For more information visit www.volkswagen.co.uk.
