80.7 MPG AND 91 G/KM: VOLKSWAGEN LAUNCHES MOST EFFICIENT POLO YET

The new Polo BlueMotion is available to order from Volkswagen Retailers today, with prices starting at £14,445 RRP on the road for the three-door, and £15,045 for the five-door model.

The new Polo BlueMotion adopts an all-new highly advanced 1.2-litre TDI three-cylinder common rail diesel engine developing 75 PS, and 133 lbs ft (180 Nm) of torque available from just 2,000 rpm. This new engine, combined with longer gearing through the five-speed manual gearbox, regenerative braking and an automatic Start/Stop system, help the new Polo BlueMotion emit just 91 g/km of CO2 while returning an impressive 80.7 mpg on the combined cycle. This grants the new Polo BlueMotion a theoretical range of over 800 miles on one tank of diesel.

These technological enhancements are accompanied by several cosmetic changes designed to maximise efficiency. Comprising bespoke bumpers, side skirts and an extended roof spoiler along with 15-inch ‘Greenland’ alloy wheels fitted with low rolling resistance tyres, they contribute towards making the new Polo BlueMotion among the most efficient vehicles currently available in the UK.

The Polo BlueMotion accelerates from a standstill to 62 mph in 13.9 seconds and on to a top speed of 107 mph.

Comfort levels remain high with manual air conditioning, cruise control and leather steering wheel fitted as standard. As with all models in the Polo range, a number of safety features are also fitted, including four airbags, ABS and ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme).

The Polo BlueMotion is available to order at Volkswagen Retailers now with the first cars expected in May. For more information visit www.volkswagen.co.uk.

NEW POLO HONOURED AT SCOTTISH CAR OF THE YEAR AWARDS

The new Volkswagen Polo has been crowned Small Car of the Year at the Scottish Car of the Year awards.

Despite being placed in a highly competitive category, the new Polo emerged as the clear winner after being tested on Scottish roads by a panel of judges.

In presenting the award, the new Polo was praised by the Scottish judges who said: ‘The Polo’s mix of quality and competitive pricing plus a wide range of trim and engine options ensured its place on pole position. If only everything in life was as reliable as our 2009 champion.’

The award, which was presented at a ceremony held in St. Andrews, represents the first UK accolade for the new car.

Since the new Polo went on sale in October over 8,000 orders have been taken, an incredible 86 per cent above the projected volume. This interest is expected to be sustained in the New Year with the introduction of the new Polo BlueMotion model which can return 83 mpg on the combined cycle while emitting just 90 g/km of CO2, making it one of the most efficient cars on the market.

Chris Craft, Director of Volkswagen UK, commented: ‘To win this award is a tremendous honour. The Scottish market is incredibly important to us and the Polo accounts for nearly a third of all Volkswagens sold in Scotland. We’re looking forward to even greater success in 2010.’

The Polo was originally launched in 1975, and the new car is the fifth generation of the model. In the intervening years over 10.6 million examples of the Polo have been sold, 1,060,000 of which have found homes in the UK.
