STRONG AND GREEN – FORD WINS TWO BBC TOP GEAR AWARDS

Ford

BRENTWOOD, Essex, 7 December, 2009 – Ford has won two BBC Top Gear awards that recognise the company’s prowess at extreme ends of the auto industry spectrum.

The Ford Focus RS, the fastest and the most powerful front-wheel-drive Ford ever produced in Europe, has been selected as “Muscle Car of the Year” by BBC Top Gear magazine, while Ford’s lowest carbon emitting model, the 98g CO2/km Ford Fiesta ECOnetic is Top Gear’s “Green Car of the Year”.

In assessing the awards, the BBC Top Gear team took into account all aspects of the vehicles. Editor, Conor McNicholas, said: “The Focus RS is nothing short of a hero. Amazing engineering in a car with huge road-presence, the RS is both massive fun and a connoisseur’s choice. It’s a bargain too.”

Commenting on the Green Car of the Year award, he said: “We’re hugely impressed with the Fiesta ECOnetic. In an era where too many think going green means having a fun-lobotomy, this Ford matches spritely on road dynamics with fabulous fuel economy. There really is no compromise. Make them all like this!”

On hearing the news, Nigel Sharp, Ford of Britain’s managing director, said: “We are delighted to have Ford cars recognised in two completely different categories. It confirms our technical capability and the strength in-depth of Ford’s fresh and exciting model range.”

The Ford Fiesta is the top selling car in the UK with almost 110,000 sales this year. The Ford Fiesta ECOnetic and the Ford Focus RS are available from £14,645 and £26,995, respectively.

PRICE ANNOUNCED FOR BRITAIN’S ‘GREENEST’ SMALL VAN: FIESTA VAN ECONETIC

FordFiestaVan

Fiesta Van ECOnetic has lowest CO2 in its segment at 98g/km (76.3mpg*)
Priced at £11,635
Ford ECOnetic line-up now covers Mondeo, Focus, Fiesta, Fiesta Van and Transit
BRENTWOOD, Essex, 07 December, 2009 – Super-frugal, stylish and ‘green’, the new Fiesta Van ECOnetic is now on sale at £11,635. Compared with the previous-generation, Fiesta Van ECOnetic will use 35 gallons less fuel in an average year – offering genuine savings in daily driving.

The new Fiesta Van ECOnetic proves form can exist with function and offers the same style that has made the Fiesta the UK’s favourite small car. With lowered suspension, low rolling resistance tyres and a specially-calibrated Duratorq 1.6-litre TDCi with coated diesel particulate filter, the Fiesta Van ECOnetic emits an ultra-low 98g/km CO2.

Produced at Ford’s wind-powered engine plant at Dagenham, Essex, the ECOnetic 90PS 1.6-litre Duratorq TDCi produces 10 per cent less CO2 than the already impressive mainstream TDCi unit and is matched to aerodynamic improvements to deliver just 98g/km CO2 and a Combined 76.3mpg.*

Steve Kimber, commercial vehicles director, Ford of Britain, said: “Fiesta Van has always been popular with fleet operators and that’s sure to develop further with the arrival of the ECOnetic. It makes a statement as soon as you see it and we know that whilst professionals are keen to ‘go green’, it’s just as important for them to leave a good impression with their clients. Pulling up in this latest Fiesta Van says it all.

“New Fiesta Van has already seen good sales success. Adding the new ECOnetic to the line-up will build on this. Overall, I expect we will sell around 2,500 Fiesta Vans a year, aiming to take around 25 per cent of the car-derived market.” he added.

Fiesta Van ECOnetic – what’s different?

Lowered suspension and rear wheel air deflectors
14in wheels with six-spoke aerodynamic covers and low rolling resistance tyres (175/65R14)
Green shift-indicator light
Modified engine calibration
Transmission final drive ratio increased from 3.37 to 3.05
Sustainability has influenced not only new Fiesta Van’s development but also the facilities in manufacturing. Ford’s Dagenham Diesel Centre produces Duratorq TDCi engines for all new Fiesta versions and derives its electricity from renewable sources, using two dedicated wind turbines.
