Reinforcing the ‘Unbelievable value’ message of its latest marketing campaign, Volkswagen is adding a new model to the Golf line-up. Using the familiar Match name, the new variant replaces the SE trim level, and adds over £1,600 worth of extra equipment while costing just £300 more than the outgoing car. The Match also comes with the newly-available option of a 140 PS BlueMotion Technology model for added economy and performance.
On top of the SE’s already generous specification which includes, among other items, ABS, ESP, seven airbags, Climatic air conditioning, alarm, cruise control and multi-device interface for connectivity to iPod or MP3 player, the Match adds unique 16-inch ‘Croft’ alloy wheels, a leather multifunction steering wheel, DAB digital radio receiver, Bluetooth system, front and rear parking sensors and an RCD 510 touchscreen stereo with six-disc CD autochanger.
The built-in Bluetooth and multifunction steering wheel ensures making and taking a call on the move is easy and safe. The factory-fitted fully integrated system makes use of the RCD 510’s five-inch touchscreen to display information at the press of a button, while its hands-free profile compatibility means it can be twinned with more phones than previously, including Blackberry and iPhone.
The new Match model is available with the same engines as the outgoing SE trim. This means customers can choose from a 1.4-litre TSI petrol with 122 PS, a 1.6-litre TDI 105 PS or a 2.0-litre TDI with 140 PS. Both the petrol and the 1.6-litre TDI are offered with Volkswagen’s seven-speed DSG gearbox, while the 2.0-litre TDI can be specified with the six-speed DSG option.
An efficient BlueMotion Technology Match model is also available with the 1.6-litre TDI 105 PS returning 68.9 mpg on the combined cycle and emitting 107 g/km of carbon dioxide. New for the Match is a BlueMotion Technology model in combination with the popular 2.0-litre TDI 140 PS unit. This offers customers a combined fuel economy of 65.7 mpg and CO2 emissions of only 114 g/km and, as such, is likely to appeal to fleet customers who will benefit from BIK tax advantages as well as environmentally conscious drivers who don’t want to compromise on performance. The BlueMotion Technology models’ enhanced economy comes as a result of a Start/Stop system and battery regeneration.
Adding to the value proposition is the option of a three-year/30,000 mile £250 fixed price servicing deal which saves customers money as well as giving them peace of mind against routine servicing costs.
Ordering for the new Golf Match opens today with prices starting at £17,730 RRP OTR for the 1.4-litre TSI three-door. The first customer deliveries will start at the end of June. SEAT is today unveiling the first details of an exciting new Leon Ecomotive Prototype which adds a radical twist to the idea of maintenance-free motoring.
The one-off prototype has been cleverly re-engineered to include a 545-litre (120-gallon) fuel tank which, working on the basis of the new Ecomotive’s extra urban economy figure of 83.1 mpg, gives the ultra-green Leon the unique ability to cover a full 10,000 miles between fill-ups.
As a result this exceptional Leon Ecomotive, which like the production version boasts a new 1.6-litre TDIcommon rail powerplant as well as new start-stop technology, is able to offer many of its lucky owners the luxury of never having to visit the filling station again.
Since the SEAT comes with a 12-month/10,000-mile service interval as standard, the new prototype model need only ever be fuelled by a SEAT dealer. As such, the car is not fitted with a conventional fuel filler flap or cap, the diesel instead being refilled via a special nozzle in the boot.
Even higher mileage drivers covering, for example, 12,000 miles a year could collect their car in, say, June and then look forward to ten months of unstoppable motoring before their vehicle’s first scheduled 10,000-mile service and an April fuel stop.
Of course to accommodate this extra-large fuel tank SEAT’s engineers have had to significantly rework the Leon’s interior layout. Out have come the rear seats to be replaced, instead, by the enlarged tank which fits neatly into the space vacated by the three seats.
A handy luggage space sits atop the extra-large fuel tank, meaning the Leon Ecomotive Prototype remains as practical as it is economical.
Other important revisions have been made to the SEAT’s standard suspension set-up of course, allowing it to maintain its sporty handling while carrying the increased fuel load. The Leon’s already efficient brakes have been uprated, too.
As ever, safety is paramount and SEAT’s engineers have worked hard to ensure the concept doesn’t compromise passenger or pedestrian protection. Significant reinforcement of the Leon’s already robust passenger protection measures ally to the fact that even should the tank be ruptured in a serious accident, a characteristic of diesel fuel is that although it will burn in open air using a wick it will not explode and does not release a large amount of flammable vapour.
The clear advantage of the prototype SEAT is, of course, never having to queue at the filling station, never again donning the plastic disposable glove before refuelling and never waiting in line to pay. In the case of the new car, refuelling takes place as a matter of course when the car visits a SEAT dealership, with dealers set to offer handy fuel payment plans alongside the existing fixed price service plans.
Head of SEAT UK Press & PR, Mike Orford, said of the intriguing prototype: ‘Clearly, you’d be a fool not to see the benefits of this new Leon Ecomotive.
‘Travelling 10,000 miles between fill-ups removes a significant amount of forecourt queuing and waiting time for Leondrivers meaning they’ll have more time to spend enjoying their car.
‘We expect the first drivers will be tickled pink when the car goes on sale here.’

Aerodynamic measures and optimised TDI unit combine to deliver even more exceptional economy and emissions figures.
New ultra-economical, ultra-low CO2 version of A3 1.6 TDI significantly undercuts the original 1.9 TDIe on emissions and boosts economy thanks to advanced common rail fuel injection, start-stop and recuperation, combined with aerodynamic modifications
Available in three-door form with five-speed manual transmission only, and in Standard trim only, priced at £18,005 OTR
Turbocharged diesel features high pressure common rail injection and delivers up to 74.3mpg with CO2 output of 99g/km (0-62mph in 11.4 seconds, top speed 121mph)
Revised final drive ratio, low rolling resistance tyres, slightly lowered ride height and modified under-body aid streamlining for optimum efficiency
A new, ultra-efficient version of the Audi A3 1.6 TDI – already the most economical premium sector car with the lowest CO2 output – is available to order from this week, extending the compact hatchback’s lead by paring back CO2 output even further to just 99g/km and boosting combined economy to up to 74.3mpg. This exceptional frugality is available in one specific A3 configuration – the three-door body style equipped to Standard specification – priced at £18,005 OTR. All other variations of the 1.6 TDI continue to offer the class-leading combination of 68.9mpg potential and 109g/km CO2 output.
The key elements responsible for the efficiency gains in the most focused 1.6 TDI to date include a modified final drive ratio for the standard five-speed manual transmission, a reduced ride height, under-body revisions to reduce aerodynamic drag and the use of slightly smaller 15-inch alloy wheels shod with low rolling resistance tyres.
These small but significant alterations combine with existing A3 1.6 TDI features including engine start-stop and energy recuperation systems. The start-stop system conserves fuel by cutting engine power at idle when the clutch pedal is released and the gear lever is in its neutral position, and then restarting when the clutch is depressed, while the recuperation function recycles a proportion of the wasted kinetic energy generated under normal braking and normally dissipated as heat, and stores this temporarily in the battery to reduce engine load when the car subsequently accelerates again.
Despite its remarkable combined economy figure of 74.3mpg and its road tax eliminating 99g/km CO2 output, the A3 1.6 TDI can draw on the same 105PS power output and 250Nm torque peak as all other versions, and consequently can match them on performance, clearing 62mph from rest in 11.4 seconds and offering the option to continue to 121mph where conditions allow.
The A3 1.6 TDI with 99g output will be available exclusively in Standard specification, which in this specific case includes 15-inch 7-arm design alloy wheels (normally 16-inch 7-arm design), manual air conditioning, remote central locking, electric front windows and a Chorus radio with single CD player. Versions equipped to SE, Sport and S line specification, and all Sportback models, continue to offer the class-leading 109g/km output and the potential to cover up to 68.9mpg (except the A3 Sportback 1.6 TDI S tronic with 112g/km output and 65.7mpg).
These efficiency standard bearers are far from the exception to the rule for Audi. The Vorsprung durch Technik brand offers an exceptional range of models that champion the cause, the most notable being the A4 TDIe Saloon with emissions of 120g/km and 61.4mpg capability, the A6 TDIe with 53.3mpg and 139g/km and the TT TDI quattro with 53.3mpg and 139g/km. In 2010, another highlight will be launched in the shape of the all-new A8 luxury saloon, which in 3.0-litre TDI 204PS form will deliver another class best with the potential to cover up to 47.1mpg while emitting just 159g/km of CO2.
