Peugeot has launched a new Marque plan, stating its goals for 2015.
To move up 3 places in the world car market.
To establish the Peugeot marque as the benchmark for style.
To become the leading manufacturer for mobility services.
In order to achieve these goals, Peugeot is relying on a new product strategy, new style lines, new mobility services and a new visual identity.
A twin product offensive
Peugeot will reaffirm its excellence in its historic heartland. A ‘Peugeot’ vehicle is always stylish and combines both driving enjoyment and environmental protection. A ‘Peugeot’ will never be purely functional; it will always awaken both emotion and invite usage. The Marque is, therefore, investing in a range of cutting edge technology: electric propulsion in the i0n and E-Vivacity scooter from 2010, diesel hybrid in the 3008 from 2011, e-HDi (Stop-Start) on all diesel models from 2011 and plug-in diesel hybrid in 2012.
Peugeot is embarking on a conquest to develop new market opportunities. Peugeot has already demonstrated its commitment to enter new markets, with the creation of the 3008 Crossover, 4007 SUV, and the new 5008 MPV. The future will see a special range of products, developed for international markets.
Peugeot recently showed its BB1 electric concept as part of a European tour of major cities. The overwhelming interest shown in the product means that Peugeot has now decided to design and build a vehicle which will embody all of the spirit of the BB1: 2.5m, 4 seats and 100% electric. The BB1 concept is a revolutionary way of seeing the urban journeys of tomorrow. It provides a very efficient use of space, dynamism and great manoeuvrability. Full connectivity with the latest smart phones, fully adaptable with an architecture the like of which has never been seen before; the BB1 will shake up the rules of motor vehicle design.
As part of this twin product offensive in its core markets and in new markets, Peugeot will launch a total of 14 new models worldwide between 2010 and 2012.
Peugeot is currently ranked in tenth position in the World Car Market and with this new strategy aims to move up three places by 2015.
New style lines
Peugeot is also revising and modernising its model styling; the SR1 concept car recently unveiled is visual proof of this. It embodies the strongest, most extreme and purist expression of Peugeot’s future styling.
It reveals all the main stylistic codes of forthcoming Peugeot models, reinterpreting the historic DNA of the Marque: speed, harmony, felineness and dynamism, and will be the star of the 2010 Geneva Motor Show in March.
New mobility services
Peugeot is the only marque to be able to offer global mobility solutions through its range of cars, light commercial vehicles, scooters, bicycles and support services.
In 2010 the Marque will introduce Mu by Peugeot into Europe, an innovative “top-up card” mobility service. With its unique product range it allows everyone, whether they already own a vehicle or not and whether they are a Peugeot customer or not, to access a range of mobility services via a pre-paid “top-up card” which can be topped up via an internet site.
New identity
Peugeot provides a unique combination between the need for a vehicle and the emotion the ownership or desire creates. Peugeot’s aim is always to place emotion at the heart of any motoring experience: a ‘Peugeot’ will never be purely functional.
In order to communicate and illustrate the new identity all over the world, Peugeot will now adopt a new international brand signature: Motion & Emotion.
In this year of its 200th birthday, Peugeot is modernising not only its identity but also its activities throughout the world with a new set of corporate guidelines and graphics.

Unique-in-class FlexDoors offer unrivalled occupant access and convenience
FlexRail and FlexSpace features bring new levels of cabin versatility to class
Fuel consumption reduced by 15% vs current range; ecoFLEX version to be offered
Luton – These are the first official pictures of Vauxhall’s new Meriva, which is set to turn the conventional concept of family-car usability on its head with a combination of clever, rear-hinged back doors which radically improve access/egress, and a raft of unique cabin features that boost interior versatility.
The new Meriva, which will be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March this year, is the first Vauxhall to feature FlexDoors, showcased in 2008’s Meriva design concept.
FlexDoors are rear-hinged back doors which swing open towards the back of the car at an angle of nearly 90 degrees, vastly improving the ease with which occupants enter and leave the cabin. Rather than having to step back, or to one side, as one would using a normal front-hinged door, the FlexDoor allows unimpeded forward access/egress to and from the cabin, enhanced further by the Meriva’s exceptionally high roof line.
For parents with children, there are further benefits. Due to the larger door opening and free space around the B-pillar, parents can lift small children forwards in to rear-mounted, second-stage child seats without having to contort themselves around a door. And with both the front and rear doors open (the fronts open at a similar angle to the rear FlexDoors) a ‘parent-friendly’ zone is created with no door barrier between front and rear occupants.
Crucially, the FlexDoors can only be opened by occupants while the car is stationary, an automatic lock engaging as soon as the car pulls away.
While the concept of two rear-hinged back doors is not new in the motor industry, the Meriva’s FlexDoor system is the first time it has been used on a family car in recent years. But unlike other rear-hinged door applications (Rolls Royce Phantom/Ghost and Mazda RX8), the Meriva benefits from front and rear doors that open independently, and does not require rear passengers to sit behind the door opening.
Class-leading in-cabin flexibility
Once inside the new Meriva, buyers benefit from two further groundbreaking innovations. The FlexRail adopts a completely fresh approach to the design of a car’s centre console, and provides owners with a variety of modular storage and comfort solutions that fix on to an ingenious dual-rail base. The new Meriva’s storage bin and cubby count has also increased, meaning that owners now benefit from one of the most practical cabins in class.
In addition, the current Meriva’s much-praised FlexSpace system has evolved with even greater practicality. Now more intuitive to use, the new Meriva’s FlexSpace allows easier fold-down of the rear seats, while moving the rear seats to create more boot, leg or shoulder room is simpler than ever.
The new Meriva’s seat comfort has also advanced, with the adoption of front seat technology from the Insignia and Astra. Like these cars, the Meriva offers the biggest range of seat adjustment in class, extending to 240mm in length and 65mm in height.
New Meriva adopts design language from Insignia and new Astra
The current Meriva effectively created the compact monocab sector when it was launched in 2003, but since then Vauxhall’s design language has evolved steadily, with big strides being made with the European Car of the Year-winning Insignia and more recently with the launch of the all-new Astra.
No surprise, then, that the new Meriva has adopted a more expressive and dynamic silhouette to its basic cab-forward monocab design. Like the Insignia and Astra, a ‘blade’ features down the side of the body, complementing a window line with a distinct ‘wave’ accentuating the FlexDoors, allowing panoramic views for rear passengers.
The design theme continues in the Meriva’s cabin, with cues taken from the Insignia and Astra enhancing the perceived quality of the materials.
Advanced chassis and more efficient powertrains
With a longer wheelbase and wider front and rear tracks, buyers will see a marked improvement in the new Meriva’s ride and handling qualities.
They’ll also see a reduction in running costs, since the engine line-up – which features six turbocharged units and power outputs from 75 to 140PS – benefits from an average fuel consumption/CO2 reduction of 15 per cent, or -25g/km across the range. A high mpg/low CO2 ecoFLEX model will also be available.
More information will be available closer to the Meriva’s debut at Geneva.

Luton – First customers will receive the keys to their new Astras today as Vauxhall celebrates the retail launch of what’s set to be the best-selling British-built car in the UK.
Vauxhall dealers across the country are expecting a surge of interest in the new five-door hatchback when their doors open this morning. They’ll also be busy delivering cars to eager customers who placed their orders soon after the car went on sale in September.
With its range of five petrol and three diesel engines and a starting price of just £15,675, the new Astra promises to reinforce its position as one of the most popular cars in its class, where it’s held sway in the UK for nearly 30 years.
Featuring a powerful and rakish design and clever interior packaging that offers more occupant space and comfort than ever before, the new Astra is available in five trim levels – S, Exclusiv, SRi, SE and Elite.
All models now come with ESP, 6 airbags, air conditioning, electric windows, CD/radio with MP3 format and aux-in and electric/heated door mirrors.
But the Astra will also offer customers a range of options not normally found in this class. AFL (Adaptive Forward Lighting) offers drivers nine headlight functions that automatically adapt to road conditions, while the addition of FlexRide brings a choice of three suspension settings which drivers can manually control or leave for the car to select automatically.
The Astra’s engine efficiency has improved by over 13 per cent on the outgoing range, meaning that drivers will not only benefit from cleaner emissions, but also a reduction fuel costs, VED and Benefit in Kind tax for fleet users. Petrol engines range from an 87PS 1.4-litre to a 1.6-litre turbocharged unit producing 180PS, while diesels span from 110 to 160PS in either 1.7 CDTi or 2.0 CDTi form.
Vauxhall’s Ellesmere Port plant will build new Astras for all European markets initially, but the UK will take the biggest share, with around 25 per cent of all production going to British buyers.

The new Volvo C30 1.6D DRIVe with Start/Stop has been awarded TheGreenCarWebsite.co.uk’s Green Car of the Year. The Volvo C30 DRIVe stormed ahead in the online poll beating rivals such as the Toyota Prius and BMW 316d to receive the accolade.
Emitting only 99g/km of CO2, the new Volvo C30 1.6D DRIVe with Start/Stop not only qualifies for free annual Vehicle Excise Duty, but also offers up to 74.3 mpg on a combined cycle resulting in around 850 miles on one tank of fuel. These eco credentials make it one of the most fuel efficient vehicles in its class without compromising on style and comfort.
On top of receiving an overwhelming majority of votes from visitors to the site, the Volvo C30 DRIVe was also unanimously voted green car of the year by the motoring journalists behind TheGreenCarWebsite.co.uk.

Volvo is introducing a series-produced plug-in hybrid as early as 2012. Pure electric power from the battery will cover the daily transport needs of 75 percent of European drivers. For longer distances, an efficient diesel hybrid engine automatically takes over when the battery energy levels start to run low. The total combined range is approximately 745 miles, whilst carbon dioxide emissions will be less than 50 grams per kilometre, with fuel consumption of up to 148.6 mpg.
Volvo is convinced that in the future, customers will continue to want safe, comfortable cars with good driving dynamics and generous load-carrying ability, irrespective of whether they are powered by electricity or other fuels.
Plug-in hybrids are an attractive alternative offering the driver the best from both electric power and conventional drivelines: extremely low fuel consumption and CO2 levels, combined with a long range and high performance.
“The new Volvo plug-in will be a truly enjoyable car to drive, featuring Volvo’s high safety and comfort standards. At the same time, CO2 levels and fuel consumption will be as low as half that available on the market today.” says Stephen Odell, President and CEO of Volvo Car Corporation.

Electric power with CO2 levels close to zero
Electricity is highly suited as a car fuel. The electric motor has a high efficiency rating and consumes about one-fifth as much energy as a corresponding engine running on fossil fuel. Volvo’s plug-in hybrid cars will be propelled by a robust electric motor that receives its power from a lithium-ion battery and additional electricity is generated every time the car brakes.
The battery is conveniently recharged at home via a regular wall socket. Electricity as a fuel is far cheaper than petrol or diesel, which results in low operating costs. The battery will take about five hours to recharge.
The range will be about 745 miles, just like in a conventional diesel car. It will be able to be driven up to 31 miles on pure electric power and when running on the battery, emissions from the exhaust pipe will be non-existent. If the battery is recharged using electricity from renewable sources, the net emission of CO2 will be close to zero, even in a lifecycle perspective. Volvo’s dealers will offer customers who buy a plug-in hybrid a special contract for the supply of renewable energy. This agreement has been created in cooperation with the company’s partner, Swedish electricity supplier Vattenfall.
Efficient diesel engines
To complement the electric motor, one of Volvo’s fuel-efficient diesel engines will also be fitted under the bonnet. It will be optimised to run on renewable synthetic diesel and will meet the tough forthcoming exhaust emission requirements.
The diesel engine can be run separately or in combination with the electric motor for optimal power and energy utilisation. For example, the diesel engine can support or replace electric power at high speeds or when the battery charge drops, while the electric motor can offer additional torque at low engine revs. Being able to combine these two power sources makes it possible to offer high performance and trouble-free use by the owner.
Most car trips cover short distances, to and from work. For longer distances, the diesel engine starts up automatically, giving the car the same properties and range as a conventional diesel car.
According to the standardised NEDC certification driving cycle, CO2 emissions from Volvo’s plug-in hybrid will be lower than 50 grams/kilometre.
“We are focusing strongly on plug-in hybrids in order to meet the demands for low CO2 emissions and to provide sustainable road transportation. We naturally expect that the relevant authorities will offer subsidies to boost developments, speeding up the creation of a market for this type of car,” says Stephen Odell.
Today’s electricity capacity covers requirements
Plug-in hybrids consume less electricity than most people believe. The fact is that a single medium-sized wind-power station can produce renewable electricity to cover the annual consumption of 1000-2000 plug-in hybrids in normal use. Even a large number of plug-in hybrids on the roads would be able to be supplied within the framework of the electric grid’s existing capacity. If 15 percent of Europe’s cars consisted of plug-in hybrids, this would mean that total electricity requirements would only increase by between one and three percent.
Through simple household energy savings, for instance by switching off the PC and TV overnight and using low-energy bulbs, the total energy requirement would probably be able to be kept at current levels. To put this into perspective, the energy-efficiency improvements that Volvo Cars has implemented in its factories in Ghent and Göteborg over the past four years correspond to the annual electricity consumption of 15,000 plug-in hybrid cars.
Plug-in hybrids – market potential
The purchase price of a plug-in hybrid is expected to be considerably higher than for a conventional diesel car as the batteries are still expensive. Fuel costs on electric power will be about one-third compared with driving on diesel, and this partially compensates for the higher purchase price, although not fully.
Volvo Cars assesses that plug-in hybrids will be commercially viable for certain customer categories in 2012, gradually widening in appeal as battery price and performance continuously improve.
Skipping stages in technological development
For the time being, Volvo Cars is postponing its plans to produce what is known as a full-hybrid based on a diesel engine.
The strategy that Volvo is adopting to start series-producing plug-in cars as early as 2012 is to exploit already existing, tried and tested platform architecture for major components such as the body and engine. Instead of waiting for an entirely new generation of car models, the company is saving time by using innovative solutions to install the battery and electric motor beside a conventional driveline. In this way, the new technology will get out to car buyers that much sooner.
Plug-in hybrids the result of industrial cooperation
In January 2007, Volvo Cars and energy supplier Vattenfall launched a joint project with the aim of testing and developing plug-in technology. A new company was founded, V2 Plug-in-Hybrid Vehicle Partnership, as a result of this cross-border initiative.
The formation of the joint company with Vattenfall creates entirely new conditions for developing next-generation green technology in a highly efficient way. Working in partnership is something that the company regards as an absolute necessity in the drive towards a sustainable future.
