Premium subcompact hatchback makes the leap from Most Exciting Car of the Year to What Car? Car of the Year in its first 12 months.
A1 is “the right car at the right time, combining desirability with ability” according to What Car? judges as it wins Car of the Year
The Audi premium hatch is dubbed “the ultimate downsizer’s transportation” by the panel of What Car? journalists and scoops Supermini of the Year
TT cruises to its fifth-consecutive Coupe of the Year crown
The new Audi A1 scooped the top honour at the prestigious What Car? Awards last night at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London’s Park Lane.
The judges were full of admiration for the premium subcompact hatchback, which “comes across as every inch a bespoke premium product“ and “oozes quality everywhere you look and from everything you touch – you won’t find better at this price.“
Steve Fowler, Editor-in-Chief of What Car?, explained: “The Audi A1 is a brilliant car: brilliantly targeted and brilliantly executed. More and more buyers are looking for smaller, more efficient cars, but with all the luxury trappings of much larger cars. That’s exactly what Audi has given them – a super-stylish, high quality small car that’s affordable and great fun, too.“
Peter Schwarzenbauer, Board Member for Marketing and Sales at AUDI AG, accepted the award and said: “Our buyers can have great confidence in the A1 now that it has been voted the best by the respected What Car? experts who we know are exceptionally thorough in their testing. We know this is right up there among the very hardest awards to win from a car title anywhere in the world.“

Congratulations to TDISport member TDIfurby.
Jason (TDIfurby) has won the title of TDISport Car Of The Year, his diesel monster started life as a standard Skoda Fabia PD100 back in early 2004.
By 2005 TDIfurby set about converting his PD100 Fabia into a PD130 (the first in the country, perhaps the world!). The modification bug firmly set in with Jason and before long a hybrid turbo was installed shortly followed by a 312mm brake setup to assist a little more with the importance of being able to stop.
Water methanol came further down the mods list to give yet more power into such a light weight roller-skate.
Now running 275bhp and with the target of 300bhp the TDIfurby project can be seen here:

We very much doubt Jason will settle for 300bhp once achieved though.
Well done for the title!

OVERALL WINNER – 5008
SPORTS CAR OF THE YEAR – RCZ
BEST MPV – 5008
BEST CROSSOVER – 3008
Peugeot has won yet another accolade to add to its impressive awards list, winning the prestigious overall award for Car of the Year in the Diesel Car Magazine awards 2010.
Not content with winning Best MPV and Car of the Year for 2010, Peugeot also grabbed titles in two of the newest categories – Best Crossover with the 3008, and stormed the Sports Car class with the stylish new RCZ Sports Coupé.
More than 275 new cars have been put through their paces by Diesel Car’s expert testers to choose the winners in ten categories, introducing three new categories – Best Crossover, Best Sports Car and Best Eco Car which recognises the best in the hybrid world of motoring. This year’s awards are sponsored by Evolution Chips, one of the leaders in diesel tuning in the UK.
In revealing this year’s winners, Ian Robertson, Editor of Diesel Car magazine said: “We have seen a lot of talented contenders this year, despite the turmoil the motor industry has faced. I am really pleased to announce Peugeot taking the top spot with the spectacular 5008 winning Diesel Car – Car of the Year 2010. It truly is the right car for the right times, with competitive pricing, generous equipment levels and a good all-round driving experience, wrapped up in a package that seats seven; what more could a family buyer want from a car!”

The new VW Polo has scored a narrow triumph in the 2010 Car of the Year Award, beating six other finalists. The result, announced today, show that the Polo scored 347 points against 337 for Toyota’s new city car, the iQ. The pair were well ahead of the next-best runner, the Opel/Vauxhall Astra with 221 points, while the other finalists were the Skoda Yeti (158), the Mercedes-Benz E-Class (155), the Peugeot 3008 (144) and the Citroen C3 Picasso (113).
Announcing the result, Autocar’s Steve Cropley, who is one of six UK based jurors, and one of 59 car experts from 23 European countries who decide the award, revealed that the Polo was chosen as the winning car by 25 jurors, while the iQ was chosen by 20 jurors. The competition was neck-and-neck throughout the counting, with the Polo’s win confirmed only as the last vote was counted.
“This year’s results show that the body of COTY jurors firmly believes that small, economical cars were the best of this year’s crop,” says Cropley. “The Polo is a very complete, very refined car which delivers all the consistent qualities VW has become so well known for. However, given its unusual layout, controversial looks and premium price, the iQ did amazingly well, and it was nice to see good support for the Astra, whose maker, GM Europe, was victorious this year with the Insignia executive car. The E-Class Mercedes, considered by many to be the maker’s best saloon model for years, was also well supported.”
The COTY jury is made up of 59 senior motoring journalists from 23 countries. Their objective is to choose the most outstanding new car to go on sale in the past 12 months. Jurors vote twice: first to select a short-list of seven from the new cars launched in Europe, then again to choose the winner.
Autocar is one of seven leading publications from around Europe which organise the COTY contest. Each publication takes it in turn to organise the vote, publicise and promote the contest and hold the prize-giving ceremony.
The jury is completely independent of the Organising Committee in matters connected with the award itself, the selection of eligible cars and the voting.
